I'm Alyssa, I study the intersection of emerging and legacy media and mediated culture through reading, watching, listening, and trial and error.
I teach about the importance of communication and its potential for positive impacts in society and I empower students to become dynamic, informational, and persuasive communicators in professional settings.
I’m currently the director of communications at the California-Pacific Annual Conference of The United Methodist Church and adjunct faculty for the Masters of Strategic Communication program at Azusa Pacific University. I previously worked for Western Governors University, where I was a senior communication representative and a member of the general education faculty (2020-2022), and supported the Open Skills Network.
I received my Ph.D. in Media and Communication at Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio (2019), where my dissertation explored the media ecology of YouTube, and how that influences the gendered performances of women creators on the platform. I’ve previously written about podcasts (2008), and music festivals (2011). From 2011-2016, I worked in training and communication for a software company on the product development and implementation team in Cincinnati, Ohio. My current research focuses on the convergence of old and new mediums and the way that manifests itself on the YouTube platform, including organizational communication strategies, performances of gender, and digital migration.
