PHDIGITAL BOOTCAMP

In 2018, I participated in the first PhDigital bootcamp at Texas State in San Marcos, Texas. Selected as one of 19 participants out of over 80 applications, the program consisted of weekly online modules from February-April, and a one week in-person workshop at Texas State from May 14-20. The goal of the bootcamp was to provide hands-on training and pedagogical concepts in emerging digital trends. Our full list of modules included: data platforms, product management, social media and analytics, web development, computational data analysis, data journalism, virtual reality, 360 video, drone journalism, digital scholarship, and curriculum development and pedagogy. Below are some of my outcomes from the bootcamp, more detailed information about the program can be found on the program's website.

360 Video

One afternoon was spent creating 360 video in order to show how easily a project can be put together and shared. One of my major takeaways from this workshop was that using Google's Story Spheres program, students can create their own 360 video with just their pocket technology. To demonstrate the ease of creating a project, we broke into groups to create and edit a video. To see my group's final video, created with a Samsung Gear 360, click above.

Data Visualization

We spent a morning covering data journalism and visualization, a topic that was completely new to me. During the workshop, I found a dataset of Pulitzer Prize winners in fiction on GitHub and cleaned the data using OpenRedine. Using both Google Fusion tables and Tableau, I created a visualized data story with multiple points including location, age, and gender of winners. The final Tableau story is available below.
